The National Science Foundation recently announced that Baylor College of Medicine ranks No. 1 on a national list of universities and colleges for research expenditures in biological science. Six other Texas institutions also made the list of 100, which ranks institutions based on basic and clinical research expenditures.

Each year, the NSF ranks institutions of higher learning in its annual report "Academic Research and Development Expenditures." The report includes rankings for numerous categories including the life sciences, which is broken down into biological (basic or nonpatient) and medical sciences (clinical or patient based). Baylor was listed ahead of other leading medical schools including Harvard, Yale, Duke and Stanford Universities in overall research expenditures in basic and clinical science.

"This is great news indeed not only for Baylor College of Medicine but for the state of Texas," said Dr. Ralph D. Feigin, president of Baylor. "The National Science Foundation’s report affirms Texas’ leadership role in the biomedical sciences. Baylor and the other higher education institutions on the list have long attracted the nation’s top scientific experts."

Baylor was No. 1 for total research and development expenditures in the biological sciences, No. 14 for medical sciences, and No. 7 for both categories combined, spending more than $334 million in 2000. It was tops in Texas for all three categories. In 2000, Baylor spent $161 million for biological sciences and $173 million in medical sciences research. Other Houston-area and Texas institutions also fared well. Breakdowns for state institutions in the overall life science category and its components, biological and medical sciences are:

Total research and development expenditures for life sciences – Baylor College of Medicine (No. 7), The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (No. 27), The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (No. 31), Texas A&M University (No. 40), The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (No. 57), The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (No. 63), and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (No. 70).
