When Dr. Herbert L. DuPont was asked to donate an original sculpture to mark the 30th anniversary of The University of Texas School of Public Health at Houston, he didn't hesitate to make the gift. He and his wife, Peggy, have worked at UT-Houston schools for more than 25 years - he as a professor in the School of Public Health and she as a research associate in the Medical School's internal medicine department. A $50,000 private donation by the DuPonts funded construction of an abstract bronze sculpture, unveiled at a public reception on the School of Public Health campus. The sculpture features a series of rectangles with an interesting spatial orientation that represent birth, health and beauty.

"It is very expressive of public health, which is also massive, healthy and growing," said Dr. DuPont.

The sculpture is anchored in the ground of Grant Fay Park, situated between the School of Public Health and the site of the future University of Texas School of Nursing building. Bruce Beasley is the artist.

"The Health Science Center has given my wife and me so much joy over the years," said Dr. DuPont. "We're delighted we can return the favor and recognize the university's contribution to our life and work."

"We are extremely excited about the DuPonts' generous gift," said Dr. Palmer Beasley, dean of the School of Public Health. "Cultural enrichment is a profound aspect of public health and their gift will help us to inspire, educate and celebrate."

"This work of art is a compelling permanent statement about the school's many achievements, as well as the generosity of the DuPonts," said Dr. Toya Candelari, assistant dean of student and alumni affairs at the School of Public Health.

Dr. DuPont is the Mary W. Kelsey Professor of Medical Sciences at the UT-Houston Medical School and chief of internal medicine at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital.
