Fire Destroys UT-Houston Rec Center
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Recreation Center was recently destroyed by a three-alarm fire. The fire started in the sauna, went to the attic and then quickly spread. All occupants of the 15,000-square-foot building were safely evacuated with no injuries. Houston firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze. University of Texas Police have barricaded the area, and are treating the building as a crime scene until a full report is issued by Houston Fire Department arson investigators. After the arson report has been released, university staff will begin sifting the ashes for any personal property they can find, such as wallets and other valuables stored in the steel lockers. Recreation Center users who have questions about their property may contact UTPD at (713) 792-2890 at any time. The Recreation Center was a total loss. An addition to the building that was under construction at the time of the fire was damaged but may be repairable because it was separated by a firewall. Improvement and expansion of the fitness facility began in May 2000 and was scheduled for completion by the end of summer 2001. The new addition to the Recreation Center consists of 6,100 square feet of weight and cardiovascular exercise area, a multi-purpose exercise room, maintenance storage, and two offices. Renovation included upgrades to both locker rooms and adding office areas, storage space, a small classroom, a conference room, a leisure game room, and a restroom. Plans for renovating the front entrance area included a combination vending/pro-shop area and remodeled lobby and office spaces.
