- The Verna and Marrs McLean Lecture in Biochemistry, sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine, Jan. 28, at the Cullen Auditorium. At 2 p.m., Dr. Jeffrey Friedman, the scientist who isolated the obesity gene in the mouse and its corresponding gene in humans, will speak; at 3:30 p.m., Dr. Richard Lerner, president of the Scripps Research Institute, will speak.

"Rodeo in the Park" Slated for Jan. 23
Saddle up and put on your cowboy boots, the sights, sounds and tastes of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo are coming to the Texas Medical Center campus.
The Houston General Go Texan Committee developed a special event to provide everyone at the Texas Medical Center institutions a unique opportunity to experience the rodeo and to celebrate Houston's western heritage.
On Saturday, January 23, "Rodeo in the Park," a rodeo festival with western fun for the whole family, is scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at M Lot, adjacent to Wortham Park. Parking will be available at the Edwin Hornberger Conference Center, 2151 W. Holcombe. A note to all Texas Medical Center institutions' employees - present your identification badge and receive free admission for you and your family members. Patients and their family members are also welcome at no charge. The general public may attended at a fee of $5 per family.
This non-alcoholic event will feature food and beverages, a horseshoe contest, a washer pitching contest, pony rides, sack races, storytelling, face painting, spin art and more. Members of the Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, Friends of Hermann Park, Pioneer Memorial Log House Museum, SPCA - Adopt-a-Pet and the San Jacinto SRT - Rolling Thunder will be on-hand. The famous JazzMedics dance band is scheduled to perform from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Continuous entertainment will be provided courtesy of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Speakers Committee and Texanna Records, Inc.
