Memorial Hermann Healthcare System President and CEO
Retires by BETH SARTORI Memorial Hermann Healthcare System Dan S. Wilford, president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Healthcare System, announced plans to retire by Nov. 1 of this year. The system’s board of directors made the announcement Jan. 4. Wilford has served as chief executive officer of Memorial Healthcare System and more recently Memorial Hermann Healthcare System for 18 years. Under Wilford’s leadership, the system has grown from three community hospitals to a comprehensive health care network that includes nine acute-care hospitals and two long-term acute-care hospitals, a physician organization, a retirement community, assisted living and two nursing homes, wellness programs, rehabilitation and home health programs, and an air ambulance service. Today Memorial Hermann is the largest not-for-profit health care system in Texas and among the largest in the country with wide-ranging services and nearly 14,000 employees. "The Board has accepted Dan’s decision with obvious reluctance, but also with deep appreciation. His strong leadership style and business acumen has taken Memorial Hermann to the height of success in the health care industry," said A.T. Blackshear Jr., chairman of the board for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System. "The system stands today as a model for health care delivery, providing world-class care for patients through every stage of life, and doing so in a way that is both fiscally responsible and community focused." Wilford steps down at a time when Memorial Hermann is financially strong and well positioned to continue to expand access to its leading-edge health care services. In response to tremendous growth in the communities served by its hospitals and consumer demand for its services, Memorial Hermann presently has a total of $420 million in facility improvements and expansions planned or underway. "The timing is right to step down as president and CEO of Memorial Hermann," said Wilford. "This summer I will have completed 40 years in hospital management and I have been fortunate to have achieved many of the things I set out to accomplish in my career. Memorial Hermann is enjoying positive growth, financial operations are strong and stable, medical staff relationships are stronger than ever and employee morale is at an all-time high." "I have been privileged to serve as the first CEO for Memorial Hermann Healthcare System and I am confident that the organization is well positioned for continued success in the future," he continued. A national executive search firm has been retained by Memorial Hermann’s Board of Directors to conduct the search and selection of Wilford’s successor, and the process is expected to take up to six months. Wilford has agreed to serve as a senior consultant to Memorial Hermann in the transition once a new president is named. Memorial Hermann, a not-for-profit health care system, provides quality comprehensive programs and services for a person’s whole life. Through its 11 hospitals located in the Texas Medical Center and the greater Houston area, Memorial Hermann offers the convenience of health care in neighborhoods where people live and work as well as easy access to the resources and technology of a university-affiliated teaching hospital. Memorial Hermann takes a holistic approach to health care, offering programs and services that address the physical, social, psychological and spiritual aspects of well being. ©2006 Texas Medical Center E-Mail: tmcinfo@texmedctr.tmc.edu URL: http://www.tmc.edu/tmcnews/01_15_02/page_06.html |
