SW Sports Medicine Provides Pro Treatment Since 1993, SW Sports Medicine, a department of Memorial Hermann Fort Bend Hospital, has helped not only athletes, but also industrial workers, car accident victims and many other injured people to get back in the game. Sports medicine rehabilitation takes a look at the entire body and how it works. This total-body approach brings the facility a high success rate because not only do they repair the patient's problem, but they prevent future recurrence by working on all of the connecting muscles and structures.
"Our approach is very different than most rehabilitation centers," says Catherine Ondrusek, a physical therapist and director of SW Sports Medicine. "I challenge myself and encourage my therapists to treat their patients thoroughly, taking the time they need with each patient, rather than trying to fit them into predetermined time slots. I believe that this technique, combined with our credentials and experience, is the reason for our high patient satisfaction and referral success." SW Sports Medicine's 13,000 square-foot facility combines state-of-the-art equipment with the latest techniques in fitness instruction and sports conditioning. In addition to conventional physical therapy facilities and equipment, SW Sports Medicine also houses a batting cage, swimming pool, basketball hoop and much more. "Although we have worked with famous athletes such as Tara Lapinski, Ken Caminiti, and several other professional athelets, we can help anyone who has sustained an orthopedic-related injury," says Ondrusek. "This includes the high school athlete, the weekend warrior, the car crash victim or someone injured on the job." One professional athlete currently undergoing treatment at the facility is Jimmy Carruth, a seven-year professional basketball player who was injured playing in International Basketball League in Virginia. "According to the therapists at SW Sports Medicine, my plantar fascia in the arch of my foot is inflamed and I have a strained tendon as well," says Carruth. "It has been painful, and I could not walk properly." Carruth, who has undergone treatment for several weeks, has improved daily. He says that the staff at SW Sports Medicine has even helped him with past injuries that were lingering. "I have had physical therapy all over the country, and I think this place is one of the best," says Carruth. "SW Sports Medicine has a family-oriented atmosphere and the staff really cares about me and my progress. I consider Catherine Ondrusek, Chris Stolle and Susan Ewing my dream team." Ondrusek has had more than a decade of sports experience in the physical therapy arena. She also is one of 315 therapists in the country who is board-certified in sports physical therapy. Chris Stolle and Susan Ewing are physical therapist assistants who have several years of sports medicine experience as well. In addition to these three, there are three other PTs, two athletic trainers and two exercise specialists on site. "Many people may not be aware that they can come to SW Sports Medicine and receive an evaluation without a physician's prescription," says Ondrusek. "We perform sports evaluations to assist the athlete in improving his or her game. However, before receiving treatment, we will need a physician's prescription." SW Sports Medicine also offers a popular Sports Performance Camp. "For the past few years, we have focused on educating high school students on how to work out and avoid injuries," says Ondrusek. Performance Camp attendees meet for six two-hour sessions and receive a fitness evaluation, instruction on flexibility, weight lifting and agility drills. "This year, we are adding programs for the junior high school age group as well," says Ondrusek. "We specialize in sports medicine, but also offer gym memberships," says Ewing. "Many of our patients continue to utilize our gym set-up long after they are released from their rehabilitation program so they can maintain a healthy status. The SW Sports Medicine center is truly an oasis for anyone who has been injured or wants to prevent injury." -Courtesy of Memorial Hermann Health Care System
