Prompted by the small number of minority advanced-practice nurses, a change in the nation's demographics and the limited access to health care services in underserved urban and rural areas, the College of Nursing started the Family Nurse Practitioner Program in June 1999.

With funding from WK Kellogg Foundation, the Houston Endowment for grant support and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston School of Nursing, the PVAMU College of Nursing is able to provide a unique collaboration which includes leadership and faculty mentoring during the first year of the program.
