  • January at the Museum of Health & Medical Science

    It's the only place in town where you can enter a giant human body through a huge mouth and then stop to rest on a set of teeth before plunging down the esophagus and into the digestive system.   • The University of Houston Law Center's Health Law and Policy Institute and TIRR will sponsor the Gardere Wynne Sewell & Riggs Lecture 2000, Feb. 24, 9-11:30 a.m. Lunch will follow at noon. Former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh will speak on "Reflection on the Americans with Disabilities Act." The lecture celebrates the 10th anniversary of the historic passage of the ADA.   • The Verna and Marrs McLean Lecture, sponsored by Baylor College of Medicine, Jan. 27, 2 p.m. at Baylor's Cullen Auditorium. Dr. John Gearhart of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will speak on stem cell research. Dr. Robert Horvitz, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will also speak on programmed cell death.

  • The City of Houston Department of Solid Waste Management has opened the City of Houston Environmental Service Center, a permanent household hazardous waste collection facility. The Environmental Service Center offers a drive-through drop-off location for citizens of Houston to deliver household chemical items that are of a hazardous nature. It is the only facility of its kind in southeast Texas.

    The facility, located at 11500 South Post Oak Road, is open to accept household hazardous waste every Wednesday from noon until 6 p.m. Beginning in February, 2000, the Environmental Service Center will add the second Saturday of the month, from 9 a.m. until 1p.m. Proof of residency in the form of a City of Houston water bill and a driver's license is required. Citizens can call the City of Houston Hazardous Waste Hotline at 713-551-7355 for more information.

    The items accepted by the Environmental Service Center include, but are not limited to, paints and thinners, pesticides, toxic cleaners, oils and fuels, pool chemicals, anti-freeze, and batteries. Items not accepted by the facility are explosives, ammunition, medical wastes, radioactive wastes, and hazardous wastes from a commercial enterprise.

    The Environmental Service Center was made possible through a grant from the Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission and the Houston-Galveston Area Council.

  • "Wit," the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Margaret Edson, continues to run through Feb. 2 at the Alley Theater. A funny, intelligent and compassionate play about a profesor of literature who struggles to come to terms with her diagnosis of ovarian cancer. M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is joining with Alley to present seven "Talk Back" sessions with members of the play's cast and faculty from M. D. Anderson after the play's performances Jan. 18, 20, 25, 26, 28 and Feb. 1 and 8. For information about tickets, call 713-228-8421 or visit the Alley's box office at 615 Texas Ave.
