Staff Writer

Shanley Chien is a staff writer for the Texas Medical Center’s monthly print magazine TMC Pulse and digital site TMC News. She joined the news team in 2015 and covers a variety of health and science topics, including medical innovations, cutting-edge research, and human interest stories related to the medical center.

A California native, Shanley earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, where she double-majored in English and media studies, with a concentration in journalism. Upon graduation, she worked for a communications company in San Francisco and Austin, Texas, for two years before returning to journalism.

Shanley later moved to Chicago in 2014, where she attended Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism for her master’s degree and reported on health and science for the Medill News Service.

Her article, “GMOs: The Scarlet Letters of the Grocery Aisle?” which explained the science behind GMOs and the wealth of evidence supporting their safety, was published alongside expert opinions arguing both for and against GMOs in the book, Opposing Viewpoints: Global Sustainability.

When she’s not reporting, she enjoys running, cooking, and binge-watching reruns on Netflix.
