Finding Hope: Understanding & Overcoming Depression

Advancements in depression treatment and research with the goal of increasing awareness and offering hope will be the topic of a community event hosted by McGovern Medical School The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth).

Guest speaker Michael Thase, M.D., will discuss “Finding Hope: Understanding and Overcoming Depression,” presenting the latest therapeutics, including pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy and neuromodulation.

The free event will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10 at the Fayez S. Sarofim Research Building, 1825 Pressler St. The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.

Thase, professor of psychiatry at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, is a leading clinician-researcher in the assessment and treatment of mood disorders, including depression and bipolar disorder. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and vice chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance.

Hosted by the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, this lecture is part of the National Network of Depression Centers (NNDC) Visiting Professor program. McGovern Medical School was recently named a Center of Excellence member of the NNDC (, a network of leading medical centers working to accelerate research, education and improved treatment options for people with depression and bipolar disorder. Support for this program was awarded through a competitive grant from the NNDC.
