TARGET AUDIENCE: This program is designed to provide a comprehensive educational opportunity for Neurosurgical and Orthopedic Residents and Spine Fellows who have a particular interest in the subspecialty of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. The program will provide an overview on the current state of MIS including endoscopy and expandable cage technology. This is a non-CME format Didactic and Hands on Educational Experience.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The Department of Neurosurgery at Houston Methodist Hospital recognizes the rapidly expanding population of patients presenting with degenerative spinal disease. There has been considerable growth in clinical research describing the approach to improved patient outcomes and continued refinement in minimally invasive surgical approaches needed for ideal clinical outcomes. There has also been a push towards integration of multidisciplinary perioperative care programs to accelerate recovery.

This 2-day event will offer both structured lectures and hands-on cadaveric training from faculty from across the country that are experts in the field of Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery. The Houston Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation & Education (MITIE) is a state-of-the-art surgical training facility that is uniquely designed for comprehensive programs of this type, located in the Texas Medical Center.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this program participants should be able to:

• Understand the capabilities of Spinal Endoscopy

• Understand characteristics and mechanics of various expandable interbody cages

• Understand the protocol of Enhanced Recovery After Spinal Surgery (ERAS)

• Understand options for cervical MIS

• Understand the potential role of lateral and oblique interbody fusion techniques in the surgical treatment of adult spinal deformity
