The Nantz National Alzheimer Center symposium will examine current knowledge on the role of inflammation in some of the most frequent cognitive disorders. Risk genes for Alzheimer’s have been recently found that code for proteins key in immune processes. This discovery has rekindled interest in the role of the immune system in Alzheimer’s disease and the potential of new therapeutic opportunities by modifying this system. Immune processes have also been implicated recently in the genesis of another cognitive disorder, this one affecting younger people. This disorder is caused by auto-antibodies against the NMDA receptor of the brain. Patients with this disorder have a process that in many ways mimics schizophrenic psychosis. It is important to detect it because it can be reversed with therapies already approved by the FDA.
