The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has received prestigious recognition as a Baby-Friendly birth facility from Baby Friendly USA, one of 529 such facilities in the country.

UTMB achieved the coveted status by providing mothers with the information, confidence and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies, based on the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.

“Mothers and babies experience life-long benefits from breastfeeding, and at UTMB, we feel it is important to provide our patients with the evidence-based information they need to make the best choices about their care,” says Donna Sollenberger, executive vice president and chief executive officer of UTMB Health System.

“Our journey to receiving Baby-Friendly designation is the result of a great deal of hard work on behalf of so many, and it is a testament to the commitment of our patient care teams to provide the very best care for the mothers and babies we care for at UTMB.”

The Sasser Family Foundation has been a generous supporter of UTMB’s ongoing efforts to become a Baby-Friendly facility.

The Baby-Friendly initiative is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

There are more than 20, 000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide. Facilities receiving the designation undergo a rigorous on-site survey. The award is maintained by continuing to practice the Ten Steps as demonstrated by quality processes.
