The Friends of the Texas Medical Center Library will host its annual book and author fundraising event on Friday, September 9, at the TMC Library, 1133 John Freeman Blvd. The event will take place from 7:00 until 9:30 pm and will feature an illustrated lecture by Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, author of Dr. Mütter’s Marvels. Ms. Aptowicz will shine a spotlight on the good, the bad and grotesque of 19th century medicine and on the life of Thomas Dent Mütter, a brilliant, flamboyant surgeon who specialized in performing radical reconstructive surgery of the severely deformed in a time before anesthesia. Dr. Mütter’s Marvels made seven national “Best Books of 2014” lists. Also an accomplished poet, Ms. Aptowicz performs and lectures internationally and nationally, including performances at Yale University, Brown University, Columbia University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College and the Universities of Australia. We are delighted that she will appear at our fundraiser.

Katherine Whaley, ABC Channel 13 Traffic Anchor, will emcee this event. A native Houstonian, Katherine is an award-winning journalist, traffic guru, and food writer. She joined ABC 13 in October of 2014 as a Traffic Anchor. She graduated from Rice University with a degree in History. Ms. Whaley is a gem and we are thrilled she will be part of this occasion.

Fabulous food and wine will be served, and there will be a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit the Friends Fund for Staff Development.

For more information, please contact Sarah Keith 713-799-7108 or sarah.keith@library.tmc.edu.
