Chileans Visit TMC Through Fellowship Baylor College of Medicine and the department of family and community medicine recently contracted with the Ministry of Health in Chile to provide an eight-week intensive, multi-disciplinary professional development program in primary care for 24 health care professionals who staff community health clinics across Chile. The International Multi-Disciplinary Primary Care Professional Development Fellowship, October 19-December 11, 1998, included two physicians, a dentist, four nurse practitioners, eight midwives, four nutritionists, four social workers, and a medical technologist. Educational activities consisted of didactic sessions, workshops, site visits, direct observation of health care, community health center administration and patient care, and individual mentoring. Topics covered the areas of primary care, education, research, and leadership and management. Fellows worked in multi-disciplinary teams for the clinical and administrative observation component. In addition, each fellow and/or team was responsible for designing special projects unique to their home primary health care center to be implemented after returning to Chile. Primary clinical sites included the Family Practice Center and the Harris County Hospital District Community Health Centers. Fellows also visited Ben Taub General Hospital, M.D. Anderson Hospital, The Hospice at the Texas Medical Center, Seven Acres, Quentin Mease Community Hospital, WIC, Star of Hope, and Ronald McDonald House. Instructors for the fellowship included faculty from the department of family and community medicine at Baylor and faculty and health care professionals from The University of Texas-Houston Dental Branch, the UT-Houston School of Nursing, the UT-Houston School of Public Health, the TMC Library, and the Methodist Hospital Institute of Preventive Medicine.
